Watery wetsuit

If you're an open water swimmer, a good wetsuit is a must. At least if you want to swim more than the 2 summer months a year when it's possible. The same goes for most water sports activities, such as paddleboarding and kayaking. But actually, a good wetsuit is also best for younger kids if they are going on a swimming holiday or a trip to the beach where the sun's harmful rays need to be limited.

The most important thing for a wetsuit is that it fulfils your needs, so it's either fully mobile, buoyant, lightweight or water-repellent. That's why you'll find many different models of wetsuits from our own brand Watery on this page. We have set out to solve all the challenges that require a wetsuit.

The right wetsuit for every occasion

In this category you will find wetsuits that all have their own strengths. For example, our Hedgehog model is ideal for those who loves to SUP all year round. It keeps you warm, provides the right amount of buoyancy - in case you fall in the water - and has durable protection around the knees so you can paddle while kneeling on the board.

If you want a more all-round wetsuit that's great for both SUP and open water swimming, look no further than our Watery Gecko wetsuit. It works well in both summer and winter, offering low water resistance in the water, keeping water out of the wetsuit and providing good buoyancy and thermal protection.

If you're looking for a more specialised wetsuit, take a look at our Watery Pelican and Watery Reptile wetsuits. They are specifically designed for open water swimming as they provide specialised buoyancy, offer much less water resistance and are flexible and durable so sharp nails won't pierce them..

If you're going to be swimming in open water, we also recommend that you get a neoprene kit to keep your hands and feet warmer and reduce heat exchange from your scalp. In addition, it is of course important that you also have a good sea bag or swimming buoy with you so that you are visible to others travelling on the water.

If you're looking for a good swimsuit for kids that provides good protection from the sun's harmful rays and at the same time offers a high degree of freedom of movement, then our Watery Calypso wetsuit is the one to get. They also come with the revolutionary Flatlock seams that ensure high durability, so it's always just the size your kid grows out of

What wetsuit should I choose?

The most important parameters to look for when buying wetsuits are their thickness and fit. A 3mm neoprene wetsuit doesn't necessarily have 3mm neoprene all over the suit, but instead areas with thicker and thinner layers. This depends on which activities the wetsuit is most suitable for.

Since water conducts heat away from the body up to 40 times faster than air, 10 or 15 degrees of hot (or cold) water will feel completely different than if it was air temperature. Therefore, you also cool down faster in water, which affects the thickness you should choose for your wetsuit.

The colder the water, the thicker the wetsuit fabric needs to be. However, this also means that the wetsuit will be much less flexible. In general, you can say:

  • Water temperatures of 22 or above do not require a wetsuit
  • Water temperatures from 15-22 degrees require a 2mm wetsuit
  • Water temperatures from 13-18 degrees require a 3mm wetsuit
  • Water temperatures from 10-15 degrees require a 4 mm wetsuit (preferably combined with a neoprene kit)
  • Water temperatures from 6-12 degrees require a 5mm wetsuit
  • Water temperatures below 8 degrees require a 6mm wetsuit and are only for experienced swimmers

The most important part to stay warm is your upper body, as the body will send all the heat to the most important organs when exposed to cold water. This is why neoprene is often the thickest here. In addition, this part can be smooth on the surface to make it more water-repellent and streamlined in the water, which you'll find in some of our Watery wetsuits.

As it's important to be able to use your arms and legs freely to create maximum propulsion in the water, the neoprene in these areas is often the thinnest. This gives you greater mobility of your extremities, making you much more flexible in the water.

Of course, all of this is only a guide, so it's important to listen to your body when you're in the cold water. At the slightest sign of discomfort and cramping, just get back on land.
