Why do you need a wetsuit?

There are as many reasons to wear a wetsuit as there are types of wetsuits. The main function of a wetsuit is to retain body heat in cold water and weather. In addition, it also provides a certain amount of buoyancy, which is an advantage in many different water sports activities. So, to make it easier to understand, we have listed the main types of wetsuits:

Wetsuit for swimming

Ocean swimming - also known as open water swimming - is almost impossible to do without a wetsuit. Cold water will quickly chill the body, which can cause cramps and create dangerous situations. There are many different types of wetsuits for swimming, depending on the activity it is used for. For example, triathlon, which places different demands on the wetsuit.

Wetsuit for diving

As with wetsuits for swimming, a wetsuit is essential for scuba diving, as the water temperature will drop significantly and quickly not far below the surface. Therefore, it will be a very short dive without a wetsuit, which will also provide the necessary buoyancy to help you balance your body position underwater.

Wetsuit for SUP and water sports

For water sports activities that take place over water, it's more important that the wetsuit retains body heat rather than being hydrodynamic and buoyant. For the really good SUPers, it's more about weather protection than cold water. But for those who get in the water every once in a while, it still needs to retain heat. That's why these wetsuits are specifically designed for that and so much more for swimming and diving.

Wetsuits for both men and women

Although all humans are essentially built the same, there are still differences in body shape between men and women. Since a tight fit is essential for the function of wetsuits, it's important that they take these differences in body contours into account. That's why there are differences between wetsuits for women and wetsuits for men, but what they have in common is that they perform better with higher functionality when they fit the body shape.

Finally, there are also wetsuits for kids, but the function of many of them is more to keep warm, protect from the sun and provide buoyancy for kids who can't swim. Of course, there are also wetsuits for kids that fulfil the same functions as the categories above.

If you're looking for a bargain, we of course also have a category with wetsuits on sale.

What is a good wetsuit?

Whether you're a triathlete, open water swimmer or SUP enthusiast, you need a wetsuit! You need a GOOD wetsuit, and of course you can find one here at Watery.dk.

But what is a good wetsuit, you might be thinking? We'll explain it to you:

1. Made of elastic neoprene
This fabric/material allows the wetsuit to stretch to the body, allowing it to better adapt to the individual triathlete/open water swimmer.

2. Glued rather than sewn
The best wetsuits are glued at the seams to avoid the water flow that occurs when the wetsuit is sewn together. And this should be avoided as it helps to further lower the temperature of your wetsuit.

3. The wetsuit should be easy to put on and take off
It's no use if you are unable to put on and take off the wetsuit yourself, for example when the zip is not attached to the wetsuit with a string. Therefore, the zip must be connected with a string so that you can easily pull the zip to open the wetsuit.

4. Great buoyancy
If you're not already a great swimmer, you need the wetsuit to give you as much buoyancy as possible. And that's really important, as it gives you a huge advantage and saves you a lot of energy that you can use on other things.

How to care for your wetsuit

A wetsuit can quickly become disgusting if you don't treat it properly from the start. Therefore, you should do the following four things EVERY time you use your wetsuit for ocean swimming. This will greatly extend the lifespan:

1. Rinse the suit thoroughly inside and out with fresh water.
2. Hang the suit to dry immediately afterwards with the outside facing out and leave it there until it is dry.
3. Turn the wetsuit over so that the inside is facing out and let it hang like that. This way it will be easier to put on next time.
4. When you put it back on, make sure you don't wear a watch and then put it on slowly so you don't make holes or marks in the suit.

How does a wetsuit work in the water?

A wetsuit is made of neoprene, which allows you to stay warm while you're in the water. Neoprene is a type of synthetic rubber that is filled with tiny air bubbles. This makes the material very flexible, but most importantly, it provides excellent insulation. You need this when water temperatures are low.

The way it works is that water enters the wetsuit, but instead of escaping immediately, it stays inside. Unlike a dry suit, a wetsuit will allow the water to come into contact with your body, but that doesn't mean you'll freeze. In fact, it is your own body heat that ensures that the wetsuit works as it should. It heats up the water and you have your very own self-heating radiator on your body.

Unlike a radiator, the wetsuit is easy to move around in, super flexible and weighs virtually nothing. If you plan to swim in the sea outside the summer season, the wetsuit is a must-have.

Buy a wetsuit

A wetsuit is brilliant when you're in water that you might freeze in. If you have a kid who is sensitive to the cold and may have trouble keeping warm in water, give them a wetsuit and the joy of water will outweigh the shivering experience.

If you like to swim outdoors - even when it's not traditionally swimming season - then a wetsuit will extend the season a lot. If you go deep-sea fishing or kayaking, you'll also be able to do so for most of the year when wearing a neoprene wetsuit.

Whether you're a keen triathlete or just a happy year-round swimmer, a good wetsuit will allow you to spend significantly more time in the water and be much more comfortable while doing so. This will keep you safer and more comfortable.

Buy the wetsuit that best suits the purpose you need it for. And enjoy being in the water for more of the year.

Why should I buy a wetsuit?

There are many good reasons to buy a wetsuit. Of course, you need something to use it for, but if you're a diver or open water swimmer, you simply can't do without it. A wetsuit is especially important during the cooler months. It helps you keep your body temperature up, even when you don't think you need it.

We can all agree that you can't swim around in March without wearing something to protect you from the cold, but the same is true in the late spring and early autumn months. Even if you don't think the water is that cold when you get in, your body will quickly cool down if you're in the water for more than a few minutes.

This is where a wetsuit can help you maintain the right temperature at all times and prevent you from getting into dangerous situations where you become completely hypothermic.

Your regular swimwear can be used when it's at its hottest, but otherwise you need a wetsuit. It's not only the safest option, but it will also help you perform much better.

Accessories for your new swimsuit

In addition to the wetsuit itself, you should also consider additional equipment for open water swimming in lakes, oceans and water openings. In addition to the wetsuit, we recommend the following:

And last but not least, glue specifically made to hold neoprene together should also be considered.

Wetsuits for ocean swimming and triathlon - this is the thickness you should choose

When investing in a wetsuit for use in the sea or lakes, you first need to determine your needs. If you only want to swim/exercise in the summer, you need a wetsuit of a certain thickness, but if you also want to swim earlier/later in the summer, you need a wetsuit that is a little thicker, etc. Therefore, wetsuits are available in the following thicknesses and when you should choose one over the other:

- 3mm: This thickness is the most common thickness for all kinds of water sports, whether it's triathlon, diving, open water swimming, etc. This thickness is perfect in the summer as it still provides a little warmth and a lot of buoyancy.

- 5mm: Mainly used in spring and late summer when the water is slightly colder. With this thickness, you can withstand being in water at around 20-18 celsius.

- 7mm: This is the thickest wetsuit and is simply used by people who hate the cold. It doesn't allow for much mobility, but it does provide a huge amount of buoyancy. This can be used in water as cold as 10 celsius. This type of suit is also called a neoprene suit.
